A major player in California is facing up to 13 years in jail for bribery of local officials as well as filing false tax forms. Prosecutors claim the defendant, who is involved in 4 dispensaries and 18 cannabis farms, owes the IRS $3.4M as well. I'm sure this is just the beginning of a legal battle but we wanted to mention it since these practices are common in the industry and operators should know the risks. We included an article about the up to 25% of federal taxes and alleviation for small businesses included in Schumer’s draft for legalization. The House of Representatives passed a spending package that contains many cannabis stipulations such as for the government to not fire employees due to cannabis use, to allow CBD to be used in food and to protect banks that work with cannabis companies.
